About Oakville

History

Passing through many hands, in 1827, the current Oakville was auctioned to William Chisholm, who then left the area to his son and brother-in-law. In 1846, Oakville’s population was just around 1,500. The people’s main business was based on wheat and lumber, shipped to other parts of the country via the railway. Other businesses in the region included making threshing machines, wagons, watches, saddles, and metal goods.

In 1962, Oakville’s town has officially announced the Town of Oakville when it merged with its neighbouring villages Bronte, Palermo, Sheridan, and the remainder of Trafalgar Township.

Economy

The city’s economy is mainly driven by the education, automobile, and healthcare sectors. According to a report, education is one of the top-most hiring sectors in the town with more than 7,000 employees.

The city is home to Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited, UTC Aerospace Systems, Siemens Canada Ltd., Budd Stuart & Sons, PwC, and more.

Education

There is a blend of public and private sector elementary schools and high schools in the town. The city is covered by the Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir.

Transportation

The average annual temperature of the city is 9.3 °C.
